Natural Help for Rosacea
When it comes to topical treatments for rosacea, I’m not a fan of the traditional topical treatment of metro-cream / metro-gel that derms often prescribe. The reason is I just don’t like the idea of using an antibiotic on my face, especially for the rest of my life (which was my derm’s advice).
Please note: I do not have a medical background, nor do I recommend that anyone try my regimen in lieue of the advice of their physician. That said, there is no harm in asking your doc about some natural supplements as an adjunct to your current regimen (as I did).
After a lot of research, I learned about several natural supplements thought to strengthen the immune system and / or provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hydrating properties. Twice daily, I take olive leaf extract, pau d’arco and pycnogenol as a means for treating my body from the inside out.
On the outside, I stay away with products containing fragrance and completely avoid using essential oils on my face because of the potential to cause further irritation. I use a broad spectrum sunscreen with mineral-based active ingredients – either titanium dioxide and / or zinc oxide. I have not seen any flare ups since starting this regimen. And while my doctor indicated this will not hurt (and could actually be helpful), she still prefers I use the metro-stuff. Being a stubborn-headed Aries, I agreed to disagree with Dr. No and have stayed with what I believe to be a good regimen for me.
As for products designed for rosacea, please be careful and read the ingredient lists. Unfortunately, some include fragrance and chemical sunblocks, which can cause irritation. For an unbiased, comprehensive list, I recommend checking out Paula Begoun’s Cosmetic Ingredient list. She’s dedicated her life to researching ingredients and separating fact from marketing fiction.
